🔗 Speeding Offences in Manitoba

Speeding and Crashes: Speeding is a leading cause of traffic collisions in Manitoba. It includes driving over the posted limit or going too fast for current conditions like rain, snow, fog, or heavy traffic. Higher speeds reduce vehicle control, increase stopping distance, and drastically raise the severity of impact during a crash.

Consequences in Manitoba: On average, 23 Manitobans lose their lives each year due to speed-related crashes. It’s not just about fines — it’s about real lives affected by preventable decisions.

Purpose of Speed Limits: Speed limits are carefully calculated based on traffic patterns, road conditions, and pedestrian safety. They’re designed for ideal conditions — not ice-covered roads or dense fog. In poor weather, even the posted limit can be dangerously fast.

Special Speed Zones: School zones and construction zones enforce lower speed limits to protect vulnerable people — children and workers. In construction zones, fines for speeding are automatically doubled, even if no workers are present.

🔗 Penalties & Fines

Speeding endangers everyone on the road — and in Manitoba, it can cost you more than just points. The province has some of the highest speeding fines in North America.

Fines start at $181.50 for driving just 10 km/h over the limit. In construction zones, that fine is doubled, regardless of whether workers are present.

Speeding tickets affect your Driver Safety Rating (DSR), which directly impacts the cost of your licence and insurance. However, photo radar camera tickets do not affect your DSR or premiums.

Extreme speeding — considered street racing — can lead to a seven-day vehicle impoundment, licence suspension of up to a year, and fines reaching $5,000.

In Winnipeg, school zone speed limits are 30 km/h from September to June, Monday to Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Outside Winnipeg, if signs don’t list a time, the reduced speed limit applies at all times.

Speeding in a school zone can result in a minimum fine of $200 and a two-level drop in your DSR. It’s also illegal to pass another moving vehicle in a school zone within 15 minutes of school starting or ending, or anytime children are present nearby.
